CCD 2008 - 2009

Our CCD is up and running for a new year with classes beginning this week. This year Sally Cullin is taking the helm as our new Director of Religious Education (DRE). We are grateful for the very fine job done by her predecessor, Tracy Sivak, who really loved her work and it showed. Tracy will continue to teach, but increasing demands at home necessitated a change. Sally is also both very eager and capable. She brings with her a wealth of experience as she has taught CCD to the youth of our parish for 13 years. She is well acquainted with many of the families in our parish as well. At Colonial Beach Greg Mendoza and Mike Downey will continue to teach CCD classes at the parish office building for children preparing for 1^st Holy Communion and Confirmation. It’s not too late. If you have not already registered your children, please do not hesitate to do so.

We are blessed to have some very dedicated men and women who will be teaching CCD again this year. Here is the line-up of instructors at St. Anthony’s this year plus many persons are willing to substitute as needed.

Andrea Landauer—–Kindergarten Amy Reese —7th Grade
Shelley Lyle — 1st Grade Mary Hannick —8th Grade
Emily Carsola — 2nd Grade Julia Brown — 8th Grade
Joanna Melton — 3rd Grade Wendy Darr — 9th Grade
Lana Zilic — 4th Grade Steve Kaczmar — 10th-12th Grade
Bob Gover — 5th Grade Tracy Sivak — Confirmation (St. A’s)
Devin LaMoy — 6th Grade Stacy Hagan — RCIC

I can’t thank these individuals enough for their generosity in teaching the Catholic faith to your children. They are undertaking this apostolate as volunteers, not for remuneration, and many have been doing so for years. In this they manifest not only their love of God but their commitment and desire that your children will receive a solid faith formation.

I need to mention, however, that despite all the best intentions of our parish staff and dedicated volunteers, there are a number of children in our parish that are not yet enrolled. The problem seems to be particularly acute in the class years following those where Sacraments were received in the previous year. In this year’s 3^rd grade class, for instance, there are currently only 2 students registered. In each class year various matters of the faith are being presented – and at an incrementally deeper level – to ensure that your children will grow in the wisdom and love of God. I can appreciate how much busier families are nowadays than in previous times, and I am certainly in favor of sports and extracurricular activities that help in the proper development of youth. I do remind you though of your primary responsibility regarding your child’s religious education. We stand ready and willing to assist you in everyway possible. For the love of God, please see to it that the faith formation of your child is not short-circuited. Remember Jesus words: “Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”

Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Ziegler
